North Atlantic Refining Limited (NARL) is a Canadian energy company that operated the Come By Chance Refinery in Newfoundland and Labrador from 1994-2021. Established in 1986, the refinery produced a wide range of refined petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil. The refinery had a production capacity of approximately 18,000 barrels per day and is strategically located to supply both domestic and international markets.

While selecting a new ERP system, NARL had to ensure it catered to the specific requirements and operations as a refinery. The chosen solution needed to support a wide array of oil and gas functions, manage intricate supply chains, ensure compliance with strict regulatory standards, and provide accurate financial forecasting. Equally important was the need for flexibility—a system capable of evolving alongside the business. With the Refinery entering the sustainable fuel industry, the ERP platform had to accommodate new business models, practices, and product lines.

After a competitive bidding process Oracle Cloud ERP, with its future-ready platform equipped to support both current operational demands and long-term strategic transformation, emerged as the ideal solution. The team at Novamodus was selected as system implementor being uniquely poised to provide a personalized implementation process that caters to the needs of the Refinery no matter the company structure.
Resilient Systems for an Evolving Future, Ready for Change with Novamodus
NARL selected Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications as its ERP solution. Implementation included Oracle Cloud Financials, Purchasing, Expenses, and Approvals (across requisitions, purchasing, expenses, and invoices). Additionally, Project Financials, Time and Labor, and Human Capital Management were deployed to streamline project tracking, workforce management, and core HR functions.
Starting in May 2016, NARL began its Oracle Cloud implementation with unique requirements, including the need for custom payroll formulas within the Time and Labor module to align with their complex calculation rules. Despite the Oracle Cloud environment being fully configured and ready for deployment, the project faced delays due to their third-party manufacturing software provider’s resource constraints, which impacted key integration milestones.
Novamodus played a pivotal role in navigating these challenges. Working closely with NARL’s internal teams and the external provider, Novamodus helped realign timelines, resolve integration bottlenecks, and ensure all dependencies were addressed to keep the project on track.
The transformation effort culminated in July 2017 with the successful launch of Oracle Cloud ERP. To ensure continued system optimization and adaptability in the dynamic energy sector, NARL engaged Novamodus for ongoing Application Managed Support (AMS). This partnership has included a series of targeted enhancement initiatives, enabling NARL to continuously evolve its ERP capabilities in alignment with business needs.
